WAIHEKE RETRO
Retro is alive and well on Waiheke and the island may be the closest outpost to central Auckland where you can do a retro walk and pick up your own retro artefacts, courtesy of the local OpShops.
Best times for a chilled-out visit are weekdays, arriving early so you don't miss the retro shopping - the Opshops are all closed by 3pm or earlier. Pricier retro is available at a shop in Oneroa village.
For those who live by vision rather than possession, you will come to see and probably photograph the examples of retro architecture, ranging from dwellings to public buildings which dot the landscape.
Although examples can be found throughout the main populated zone ( West end), the hub of retro Waiheke is found in Oneroa. This page is devoted to capturing some favourite examples because their existence is not protected against the whim of future development.

Then walk down to the village, passing the Jewellery shop and the Fruit & Vegie store ( slide 2). First bach on the walk is along Oneroa Beach, on Beach Parade. Beach access is down the track beside the Advice bureau. On the beach head right, along the road to view slide 4. Return to Oneroa Village Oceanview Rd up the road at the east end of the back or track midway along.
Stand at the corner of Oceanview & Tui St to view slide 5 -the Red Cross Building ( which houses one of the island's OpShops)
Tui St needs special mention as is retains several examples on the left and right sides as you walk down. Slide 6 is on the right side near the top. SMURFIN
A keen young SMURF has been observed taking advantage of Waiheke's early summer weather. Here, close to Oneroa Village, "swimming" on a sea-shell, in the tranquil waters of Blackpool Beach.
Waiheke is a perfect destination for Smurfs, in fact a Smurf Convention would fit right into the 1960's-80's style that is abundant on this little island.
