SO YOU WANNNA BRING YOUR POOCH TO WAIHEKE?
WAIHEKE remains one of the best places for dog and owner to enjoy a great adventure. Sure we have Animal Control bylaws and they are strictly enforced, but dedicated dog owners have lobbied long and hard to ensure our furry best friends get a fair deal in terms of decent, healthy opportunities to run like the wind, play and explore.
The passenger ferry takes dogs for FREE now, though you have to remain on the outside seating during the journey.
SUMMER BEACH RULES are fairer than on the mainland: longer hours of access and more places to go: clear off the beaches by 10am and come later after 4pm
EXCEPTIONS:
1. These beach areas have no time or seasonal restrictions:
Owhanake Beach, Korora Rd
Surfdale - east end - access via Hooks Lane
Anzac Bay, Natzka Rd Ostend
2. PEAK Summer Vacation December 24 to end of February 1st: no access to main beaches till 6pm
3. No time or seasonal restrictions apply on east end beaches - which are east of Whakanewha/Rocky Bay on the south coastline and Piemelon Bay on the northern coastline. In reality access issues & Conservation areas reduce this effectively to just Man-O-War Bay and Woodside Bay.
DOGS ON WALKWAYS
Keep your dog under control and you can enjoy hours of adventure. Several tracks are accessible close to Matiatia Wharf. Beaches such as Oneroa and Onetangi are sited in front of a parallel roadway. Dogs can be walked on leash along these road frontages during summer at any time
WINTER RULES
From Easter (Tuesday) until the Friday start of Labour Weekend,( usually April-October) the restricted times applying to main Waiheke Beaches are not in force.
This simplified guide is to assist those struggling with the Council website: refer to http://www.aucklandcity.govt.nz/council/documents/dogpolicy/default.asp#a
